(BLOOMINGTON) - 22 residents at Eignemann Residence Hall on the IU Campus got stuck in an elevator after returning to their rooms after a tornado warning on Sunday.
The group of students exceeded the weight limit, causing the elevator to drop from the first floor to about halfway beneath the ground level. Those in the elevator alerted officials through the emergency call button.
Almost immediately, some suffered panic attacks. Others tried to ease the tension by playing games to keep those who were anxious occupied until maintenance crews could respond.
Residents were trapped inside the elevator for about 50 minutes.
Once help arrived, the elevator technician was able to pry the door open, and residents were able to pull themselves up and out of the elevator.
