Daviess County Commissioners Eliminate Jail Tax

Last updated on Wednesday, November 1, 2017

(DAVIESS CO.) - The Daviess County Council passed an ordinance Monday to eliminate the jail tax.

The 0.25 percent Special Local Option Income Tax has been on the books for over a dozen years.

County Council President Mike Sprinkle says come January 1st, that tax will come off of county residents' paychecks much earlier than planned, thanks to the ability to pay off the bonds early.

The remaining balance in the jail account being paid on the jail is $3,033,000. Another $9,900 will come out of Riverboat money received by the county. The tax will continue to be collected through the end of the year, any excess money will go to the highway department.

The day was extra special for Sprinkle as he was one of the main advocates for the creation of the tax when it began.
