(BEDFORD) - Last night the Limestone Capital Half Marathon and 5K, Corporate Challenge and School Challenge winners were awarded at the Downtown Depot.
"Wonderful success. Very, very pleased with the outcome and the number of participants and everybody that had a good time. All the positive feed back is really reassuring," said Director of Bedford Parks Department, Barry Jeskewich, on the overall out come of the 4th annual Limestone Capital Half Marathon.
Dr. Jim Sowders and his team took home the traveling Corporate Challenge trophy- again. The Corporate Challenge is a collection of points earned from the number of participants in each race.
Parkview Intermediate School won the School Challenge.
Mayor Shawna Girgis and Jeskewich presented the CPO of the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County with a check of $5,000 from the proceeds of the race to be used at the club.
This was the first year for the Bedford Parks Department to organize the yearly marathon.
"I do want to say a special thanks to Barry and the Parks Department for taking on this challenge. I felt very privileged when we were first approached about doing a half marathon. That's something that Bedford has never done before. We had been talking a lot about wanting to make our community healthier and how to get more people engaged. It just felt like a natural extension of what we were doing," said Mayor Shawna Girgis.
"It was a challenge, but one we reached and then when Chris said you know we don't think that we can keep doing it, I said, 'Yes! The city needs to do it.' Then I said, 'Barry, the Parks Department and you need to do that!' He said yes and I appreciate his hard work and his entire team," Mayor Girgis continued.
There were a total of 647 participants; 44 participated in the 1- Mile Fitness Walk, 375 ran in the 5K, 120 ran in the Half Marathon and there was a total of 105 youth.
Mark your calendars for next year's race on October 6th, 2018.
