(SEYMOUR) - Seymour police say a man who is charged with two counts of child molesting met the 13-year-old male victim through his church’s youth ministry program.
Police arrested 39-year-old Courtney Justin Lynn Friday afternoon. He is being held without bail at the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown.
Police began their investigation after the boy's mother took him to the police department in September to report the crime.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Sgt. Jack Swindell, the victim described Lynn as his "adopted dad." The boy had met Lynn about five years ago at the church they both attended in Seymour. Lynn, the victim and the victim's brother spent time together at Lynn's home often.
The boy told police the first incident happened when he and Lynn were watching television at Lynn's home and the boy dozed off. The boy woke to Lynn touched him inappropriately. The second incident happened about two weeks later when the victim says he was at Lynn's home and trying to go to sleep and Lynn began fondling the boy.
After the crime was reported, police contacted Lynn saying they needed to talk to him. That is when police say Lynn sent text messages to a family member saying he was going to harm himself.
Police went to Lynn's home where they found Lynn had overdosed on an unknown amount of medication. An ambulance was called and Lynn was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police contacted the church's youth minister to inform her Lynn was being investigated for having sexual contact with a child.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the youth minister told police she had concerns about Lynn spending an unusual amount of time with certain children and felt that Lynn was inappropriate in the way he touched the victim, although she hadn't observed any sexual contact between the two.
She then told police Lynn would not be allowed to have any further contact with children at church activities.
