(SEYMOUR) - A Seymour couple are facing charges of child neglect after an officer found them smoking marijuana in their vehicle with their 6-month-old child in the back seat.
According to a probable cause affidavit, on Oct. 26, Jackson County Sheriff's Department Reserve Officer Eric Browalski was parked at the bridge on State Road 258 doing paperwork when he saw a red passenger car pull up and park under the bridge.
Browalski got out of his police vehicle and approached the car to make sure everything was okay and that is when he noticed a 6-month-old male baby in the back seat along with the driver 27-year-old, Corey Quick, and his passenger 24-year-old Ada Baldwin in the vehicle.
Baldwin rolled down the window and the officer could smell the odor of marijuana in the vehicle.
Browalski said he told the pair he didn't think it was good to be smoking marijuana around a child and asked if they had more on them. The couple said they had forgot the child was in the vehicle.
Quick told the officer he had just finished smoking the last of a joint but said there were no other drugs in the vehicle only a glass smoking pipe in the armrest of the vehicle. The two were asked to step out of the vehicle.
The officer was given permission to search the vehicle and found a baggie containing a small amount of a white rock-like substance that the officer believe was meth inside a black leather bag that had been stuffed into the baby's diaper bag.
Both Baldwin and Quick denied knowing the baggie was there saying it belonged to a friend who had watched the baby earlier in the day.
Baldwin and Quick were arrested and charged with maintaining a common nuisance and neglect of a dependent. Quick was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
The officer did not charge the couple with possession of meth because the substance was too small to test.
The child was released to a friend, and Baldwin and Quick were transported to the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown where they are being held without bond.
