(ORLEANS) - The 8th Annual Orleans Christmas on the Square is Saturday.
The event will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m at the Historic Congress Square downtown. The family fun holiday event Sponsored by Orleans Chamber of Commerce.
At 5:15 p.m. the Santa Hat Run/Walk will step off near the bandstand. It is free for all ages. Bring your Santa hat and join the fun.
The popular Children's Christmas Funtime Express train ride returns and will provide free rides around the decorated historic Congress Square.
Live holiday entertainment is planned throughout the evening including special performances from the Orleans Choir who will also officially welcome Santa in song. The Orleans High School band and special guests members of Amber's Dance Studio of Salem will perform at 6 p.m. on Bicentennial stage located in the southwest corner of the park.
A Nativity with live animals telling the traditional Christmas Story, sponsored by the Orleans Ministerial Association will be located on the south side of the square.
Horse & Carriage rides, weather permitting, will be given at the Chamber Welcome Center, located on north side of square.
Santa Claus will arrive downtown on the town's restored 1926 Peter Pirsch Firetruck at around 5 p.m. at the decorated bandstand and the official town Christmas tree. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras and take their children's picture with Santa. Members of the Orleans Fire Department will also be on hand to assist with Santa's annual visit.
At 6 p.m. Christmas On the Square Hat Walk, a new event this year sponsored by the Orleans Public Library will step off. Prizes will be given to both adults and children for the best hats.
Make sure children bring their Postcards to Santa. If they don't have a post card one can be picked up for free at various businesses around town including Orleans Town Hall, Fifth Third Bank, Orleans Antiques, Sprigler's Mkt & Deli, and Mid-Southern Bank. Santa's Mailbox is located in front of Chamber office. All cards will be forwarded on to Santa at the North Pole and selected ones may also appear in upcoming editions of The Progress Examiner.
A number of vendors are expected to be set up inside the park area Saturday evening including Tri Kappa who will be offering homemade holiday goodies for purchase. Mt Pleasant Baptist Church will also have a hospitality tent set up in the park.
Some business owners around the square have also announced plans to be open during the event and invite attendees to stop in including Sprigler's Market & Deli.
