(BLOOMINGTON) - White Buffalo Inc., a nonprofit wildlife management company based in Connecticut killed and removed 62 deer in a planned cull at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.
The city of Bloomington hired the sharp shooting company to reduce the population by up to 100 deer, in December for $35,000.
Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department Natural Resources Manager Steve Cotter says overpopulation of deer at the preserve has reduced the size and quantity of many plant species.
The city will monitor the number and heights of plants to assess the effectiveness of the cull.
Opponents argue nonlethal methods need to be researched and there is not enough evidence of a serious deer problem causing damage to the vegetation. They also claim the city is paying White Buffalo too much money.
Funding from 'Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry' allowed the city to have the deer meat processed. The city then donated the venison to Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
Griffy Lake has resumed its normal hours.
