(PEKIN) - A Pekin man is recovering at a Louisville Hospital after suffering burns in a fire that destroyed his home on Tuesday night.
Corey Drury was burned when dragging a burning mattress out of the modular home in the 9700 block of Blue River Road.
Pierce-Polk Fire Chief Jeff Miller says Drury's young daughter had unintentionally set the mattress on fire. The fire then spread to other items in the home.
When firefighters arrived just after 7 p.m. they found the flames shooting out the windows and doors of the double-wide modular home.
"The fire had engulfed half of the structure," Miller added.
The extremely cold weather and icy roads hampered firefighters efforts to respond to the blaze. One engine got stuck and had to be pulled out by a wrecker. The cold temperatures also caused valves to freeze and burst.
Assisting at the scene were Franklin, Jackson, Gibson and Monroe Township (Henryville) fire departments.
