(BEDFORD) - Southern Indiana Development Commission Rex Knight presented the recommended bids for the demolition of the old Huron School at the Lawrence County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday morning.
The engineer for the project recommended Lawyer Excavation of Seymour do the asbestos removal at a cost of $11,500 and Doyen Construction out of Bay City Michigan will raze the building for $94,600.
"The total cost will be $160,100; well below the estimated costs," says Rex Knight of Southern Indiana Development Commission. The county will pay $27,500 of the total cost, which will be paid with riverboat funds.
Those recommendations were taken under advisement until the $230,000 grant funds from the Office of Community Rural Affairs are released to the county.
In other business:
The commissioners opened three bids for Bridge 67 on Lawrenceport Road. The now 96 foot bridge over Sugar Creek will be replaced with a 110 foot bridge at an estimated cost of half a million dollars. Those bids were taken under advisement.

Brad Bough and Steve Grissom requested the commissioners consider naming April 3rd Gus Grissom Day.
"This something well overdue," says Steve Grissom. "We would like to recognize and celebrate Gus Grissom's life every year on his birthday, April 3."
Saturday will mark the 51st anniversary of his death. In 1967 a flash fire aboard the Apollo I test capsule took the life of astronaut Grissom.
An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Grissom was one of the first seven Mercury astronauts. Also killed in the fire were fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee.
Bough and Grissom will draft a resolution proclaiming April 3rd Gus Grissom Day and present it to the commissioners at a future meeting.

As of Tuesday morning, Sheriff Mike Branham reported that there were 174 inmates housed at the jail, of those 38 were females, 13 were Level 6 felons and there were no Department of Correction holds.
In the judicial review report, Sheriff Branham says the jail numbers are "pretty telling."
"The numbers have increased steady from 2012 to today," Sheriff Branham added. "They have taken a drastic upturn - with an average of 156 inmates in 2017 which is extremely high, from 130 inmates in 2016. If the jail populations continues to stay on this trend - a 10 to 20 percent increase each year - we will be in trouble."
Sheriff Branham presented the commissioners with the commissary report for the second half of 2017.

The work to replace the guide wire on the communication tower located on Kings Ridge Road will begin on Feb. 5th or 6th.
The commissioners signed a contract for All State Towers to replace the guide wires at the communication tower.
"They are out of Henderson, Kentucky and will probably travel on Monday Feb. 5th and begin work on the 6th," says Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer.
The tower, built in 1961, is 320-feet tall and has 36 guide wires securing it to the ground and the aging guide wires need to be replaced.

The commissioners renewed a $12,000 a year contract with MicroVote. The contract also includes updates for the county's voting machines.

The commissioners approved the hiring of a part-time nurse at the health department. Paula Edwards, with the Lawrence County Health Department, says the position has been open since March of 2017 and the nurse's salary will be paid for with grant funds.

The commissioners granted permission for Chad Shew and Nedra Block Fleetwood of the Lawrence County Probation Department to apply for grant funds.

The commissioners renewed a contract with Tru-Green to care for the courthouse lawn.

Appointed Larry Chenault to the ABC Board and Veterinarian Karen Rusch and Dr. Dennis Turner to the Health Board.
