(HELTONVILLE) - A Heltonville woman was arrested Monday morning after police found her setting in a vehicle in the area of US 50 East and State Road 446.
According to Lawrence County Police Chief Deputy Aaron Shoults, police had received a tip that 40-year-old Shannon Rishforth may be involved in drug activity.
"During the encounter the officer obtained a consent to search," Chief Deputy Shoults says. "Inside the vehicle a glass smoking device was found and it contained a white residue that tested positive for meth."
Rishforth was arrested and taken to the Lawrence County Jail.
"Upon arrival Ms. Rishford was able to place something in her mouth," he added. "When the officer attempted to keep her from swallowing the substance she bit the officers left index finger, causing a minor injury."
Rishford was taken inside the jail, while the officer checked the backseat of his car where he found a clear cellophane wrapper with a brown substance on the outside of the wrapper. Inside the wrapper was a white powder residue.
"This wrapper spilled when the officer removed it, but he was able to obtain enough sample for a field test and that resulted in a positive result for fentanyl," Chief Deputy Shoults added.
Rishforth was transported to a local hospital and medically cleared and then transported back to the jail on the charges of battery on a police officer, possession of meth, obstruction of justice, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while driver's license suspended
