(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested early Saturday morning after police received a call about a man possibly with a handgun and breaking into vehicles in the 1100 block of West Eighth Street.
When Bloomington Police arrived at 1:10 a.m. they found a vehicle with the door open and a man who matched the description the caller had phoned in to police.
Police detained 28-year-old Joseph Oakley who admitted going through vehicles looking for change, but said he hadn't taken anything.
During a search of his pockets police found a .45-caliber bullet. A .380-caliber handgun was located under a nearby air conditioning unit.
Oakley told police he had the handgun for protection, and had hid the gun when he saw the approaching patrol car.
Officers checked the gun's serial number and discovered it had been reported stolen.
Oakley was arrested and charged with theft, possession of a handgun without a license, trespassing and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
