Teens Avoid Serious Injuries After Jeep Flips

Last updated on Wednesday, January 17, 2018

(ODON) - Two teens escaped serious injuries after the Jeep they were in flipped at the intersection of County Roads 1100 East and 1675 North.

At approximately 11:08 p.m. Sunday night, Daviess County Police received a call of a single-vehicle crash with a teen trapped inside.

Indiana State Police responded and found a 1994 Jeep Wrangler upside down in a deep ditch.

Police say 16-year-old Ethan Malone of Odon was traveling north on County Road 1100 East and was traveling down a steep hill when the Jeep went off the east side of the road and got stuck in a small ditch. His passenger, 17-year-old Ian Bird, also of Odon, got out of the Jeep and attempted to push the vehicle out of the ditch while Malone streered.

They successfully got the Jeep out of the ditch, however, due to the icy conditions, the Jeep began to slide out of control down the hill where it traveled into a steep ditch and flipped on its top before coming to a stop in the bottom of the ditch.

Malone was trapped in the vehicle for a short time but was able to free himself by crawling out of the wreckage.

Police say Malone was wearing his seat belt at the time. They believe this reduced his injuries during the incident.

He was transported to Daviess County Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Bird was treated at the scene for an abrasion on his hand from pushing the vehicle out of the smaller ditch.

Assisting the Indiana State Police Trooper Andrew Beaver at the scene was the Daviess County Sheriff's Department, South West Medical, and Odon Volunteer Fire Department.
