(SALEM) - The Washington County Sheriff’s Department has sworn in their first female deputy.
The Salem Leader reports, Deputy Abby Powers, who started this month, is the first female deputy to ever serve Washington County.
Sheriff Roger Newlon says he is proud and excited to have a female officer. Deputy Powers came highly recommended by the merit board, which is responsible for interviewing candidates and making a hiring recommendation, says Newlon.
Powers, 25, a Trafalgar native, is a graduate of Ball State University with a degree in exercise sciences - specializing in aquatices. She began her career at the department as a dispatcher and when a deputy position came open, Powers applied.
She lives in Pekin with her husband Eric Powers, who is an Indiana State trooper.
