(SPRINGVILLE) - A Bloomfield man died in a multi-vehicle crash Friday morning on State Road 54, near the State Road 58 split.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, 34-year-old Joshua Bean died at the scene after suffering burns to his entire body and severe leg injuries.
The accident was reported around 7:49 a.m.
Police say Bean was traveling east on State Road 54 in a 1988 Ford F-150 and was approaching a curve, when his truck crossed the centerline and collided with the trailer of a Peterbilt 386 driven by 55-year-old Robert Chapman of Mitchell. The vehicle is owned by Hancock Trucking in Mitchell.
The front left tire of Bean's pickup was ripped from the truck. Police say it is unclear why Bean drove across the centerline.
Bean's truck then collided head-on with a 2002 Dodge Durango driven by 34-year-old Rachelle K. Sturgeon of Mitchell, who was traveling behind the semi tractor-trailer.
After the collision, both Bean's and Sturgeon's vehicles were engulfed in flames.
Sturgeon was able to get out through the rear of the SUV. But Bean was trapped inside his truck and couldn't get out.
Sturgeon suffered a possible broken ankle and leg and was taken by an AMR ambulance to a IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment. Chapman was not injured during the incident.
The accident remains under investigation.
