(JUDAH) - The owners and their two Scottish Terriers were able to escape the blaze that caused extensive damage to their home in the 210 block of Sunny Slopes Circle, Sunday morning.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 9:59 a.m.
"On arrival, the first engine company reported heavy fire extending to approximately 50 percent of the structure," says Marshall Fire Chief Chad Hayes.
Mutual Aid was requested from Oolitic, Perry and Indian Creek Fire Volunteer Fire Departments. Additionally IU Health EMS, Lawrence County Emergency Management, American Red Cross, and Marshall Twp Fire Auxiliary assisted at the scene.
Firefighters had the blaze under control around 11:17 a.m.
The two story split level home with attached garage was owned by Timothy and Karen Inman. They were alerted to the blaze when a neighbor stopped.
The Inmans were able to safely evacuate their home along with their two Scottish terrier, but their pet cat did not escape and perished in the fire.
"At this time the fire is under investigation," Chief Hayes says. " Investigators with IDHS (Indiana Department of Homeland Security) will be present at the home the first part of the week to attempt to determine a cause."
The last fire units left the scene at 3:21 p.m. after extensive salvage and overhaul operations were complete.
