(GREENE CO.) - Greene County is joining a growing list of areas hoping to spur development along Interstate 69.
Brock Turner, of Indiana Public Media reports, the county's re-development commission voted Thursday to approve the expansion of an existing TIF district in hopes of incentivizing future economic development along a section of the interstate.
TIF districts are areas that a government designates for development. County Attorney Marilyn Hartman says officials will extend existing sewer lines into the area and doesn't anticipate anyone will really notice a change in the amount of property tax they're paying.
Hartman says the proposal could have a minor impact on the Eastern Greene School corporation, because property taxes generated in that area would go back to the TIF district, rather than to local schools. She says county officials will closely monitor the school's budget to ensure they receive adequate funding.
