(BEDFORD) - Whooping cranes are among the rarest birds on the planet, and they make their winter home at nearby Goose Pond in Greene County. On Sunday at 1:30 p.m. the library will welcome James Kawlewski, a whooping crane outreach program assistant for the International Crane Foundation, to speak about the cranes.
Kawlewski has a degree in biology with an emphasis in ecology and evolutionary biology, and is currently spending the winter with the cranes at Goose Pond.
He will speak about the great conservation success story of the whooping crane that faced extinction in the 1940s with a population of about 20 birds.
The cranes have recovered to about 500 birds in the wild today. Kawlewski will discuss crane biology and management and the current challenges to whooping crane recovery and what we all can do to help save the species.
This program is appropriate for adults, teens and older children.
