(BEDFORD) - The John Wallace chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced their DAR Good Citizens - Allie Crulo-Rood and Zachary Chastain.
The winner of the American History essay is Quincy Pickett, of Parkview Intermediate School.
Crulo-Rood, a senior at Bedford North Lawrence High School is the daughter of Karen and Jason Webb and Robert and Mindy Rood. She is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, the BNL girls basketball team and Christian Athletes. She is the student body and senior class president and is a cadet teacher in Mrs. Spreen's first-grade class at Shawswick Elementary School.
Her future plans include attending Indiana University Southeast where she plans to study elementary education.
Chastain, a Mitchell High School senior, is the son of Greg and Jill Chastain. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, art club, National Honor Society, and is in the top 10 of his senior class. He has participated in football and martial arts.
His future plans include majoring in biology, earning a bachelor's degree, en route to becoming an oncologist or pulmonologist.
Pickett is the son of Zack and Jordan Robbins and is a student in Sharon Benham's fifth-grade class at Parkview. His essay was titled, "World War I: Remembering the War to end all Wars." In the essay, he made himself the character of his writing.
He has served on the Parkview Student Council and was a member of the basketball team both his fourth and fifth grade seasons.
Crulo-Rood, Chastain and Pickett will be recognized at an awards dinner on March 26 at the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Reservations for the 6 p.m. dinner may be made by contacting Martha Cox, (812) 849-2432. Tickets are $11 and reservations are due by March 22.
To be nominated as DAR Good Citizens candidates, students must exhibit attributes of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The scholarship portion of the program consists of a written essay. The essay's broad theme is, "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It." The focus for the year was: "How has America advanced the cause of Freedom in the rest of the World?"
