Help Needed To Plant Dogwood Trees

Last updated on Sunday, March 11, 2018

(ORLEANS) - To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Orleans Dogwood Festival, Orleans Chamber of Commerce representatives are calling on Orleans citizens to assist in planting 50 new dogwoods throughout town.

Residents can purchase trees from Gary Moore of Lawnmoore, LLC who has agreed to provide the trees at his cost. The 6- to 7-foot trees in white, pink and red may be purchased for $145 each while supplies last. If residents don't want to plant the trees, Moore will for an additional charge of $30 for labor.

Orleans Chamber Executive Director Robert Henderson, says a large number of the town's original trademark dogwoods, dating back to the mid 1960s and planted as part of an effort known as Operation Dogwood, have died and were removed over the years.

"We would like to encourage residents, business owners, civic groups and churches to consider purchasing and planting a tree this spring," Henderson says. He also noted that planting of the trees could be in honor or memory of someone.

The trees are expected to be delivered (weather permitting) and available for pick up beginning this week at the Orleans Town Garage complex.

Special order forms will appear inside The Orleans Progress Examiner or from Orleans town offices during regular business hours. Payment can be mailed to Orleans Dogwood 50, c/o P.O. Box 9, Orleans, IN 47452. Checks should be made payable to Orleans Dogwood 50.
