(MITCHELL) - A Lawrence County Superior Court II jury found Brooke Shelton guilty of two felony counts of aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon on Friday.
According to court records, 32-year-old Shelton was arrested October 17, 2017 after Mitchell Police were called to a home 400 block of Dale Street at 2:16 a.m. after a report of a stabbing. When police arrived they found 42-year-old Matthew Lawson bleeding on the front porch with several stab wounds to his abdomen, back and side.
Witnesses told police Shelton had stabbed Lawson.
Police found Shelton at the home. She had suffered a head injury and had blood on her face and clothing.
Police say Shelton had got into an argument outside of the home with a woman who lives at the address.
Lawson heard the argument and tried to intervene by grabbing Shelton who had a knife in her hand.
Reports note that when Lawson grabbed Shelton she repeatedly stabbed him.
Shelton was then injured when Lawson punched her in the face in self defense.
Lawson was flown by medical helicopter to IU Health Hospital in Indianapolis. After being treated, he was later released.
Shelton was represented by public defenders David Shircliff, Jennifer Schlegelmilch and Jim Spangler. Deputy prosecutors Katie Kleihege and Rebecca Sharon prosecuted the case. Judge William Sleva presided over the trial.
