Last updated on Monday, March 5, 2018

(SEYMOUR) - Two Medora residents and five children were injured in a crash on Interstate 65, Sunday morning near the Jonesville exit.

The accident occurred at 11 a.m. when there was an apparent problem with a tire, causing the driver 33-year-old Thomas McMurray to lose control of his 1998 Ford Explorer Sport.

According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, the vehicle spun, left the east side of the interstate, went down an embankment, overturned multiple times and came to rest on its roof in a field.

Some of the passengers were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle. Police say there were not enough seats or seat belts for everyone in the SUV.

McMurray suffered serious injuries and was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital.

The most seriously injured were 35-year-old Kristina McMurray who was a front seat passenger and 12-year-old Dakota McMurray. Both were flown by helicopter to Indianapolis hospitals.

Four other passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to Columbus Regional Hospital, Wheeles said.

The northbound lanes were closed for about two hours while police investigated the crash and cleaned up the scene.

The state police also investigated another property-damage wreck in the northbound lanes that occurred as traffic was backed up from the first crash, Wheeles added.

He said the investigation is ongoing and toxicology results are pending.

Assisting at the scene were Jackson County and Bartholomew County sheriff's departments assisted along with those from Columbus and Seymour police departments. Others assisting included firefighters from Seymour and Columbus fire departments; personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and Columbus Regional Emergency Medical Services; Hampton's Wrecker Service personnel; and Indiana Department of Transportation workers.
