Building a Better Bedford Weekly Update

(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford is providing weekly updates on the downtown facade project which will begin today at Regions Bank on J Street.
T&G Construction, will be providing weekly updates on work to the city has it is completed and what they will be working on next.
The facade project is part of Bedford's Stellar Communities projects. Around $19 million is being invested for improvements to the downtown area through a combination of grants, city investment and private donations. Building owners had to pay 20 percent of the cost.
Stellar Downtown Streetscape Project
Construction is underway to update the streetscape in downtown Bedford. Below is a list of activities to anticipate happening over the next week. A weekly update will be distributed during the remainder of the streetscape construction.
Last week's progress:
- Sidewalk, curb and pavement removal finished on the west half of the block on 16th Street between I Street and J Street.
- Began installing storm sewer on the west half of 16th Street.
- Light poles and existing handrail removed on the east half of 15th Street.
What to expect April 9th thru April 14th:
- Storm sewer work will continue on the west half of 16th Street. Begin excavating for edge treatment footers on the west half of 16th Street. Begin sidewalk demolition on the east half of 15th Street. This was supposed to begin last week but the storms coming through delayed Duke Energy in removing the light poles.
NOTIFICATION: Weddle Brothers will be doing construction work on the west half of 16th Street and the east half of 15th Street.
NOTE: Weather could affect some work activities and could cause delays.
Customer Access:
- Customer access is available throughout the project.
Parking:
- There will be no parking on the west half of 16th Street during construction of the west half of the block.
- There will be no parking on the east half of 15th Street during construction of the east half of the block.
Traffic:
- Eastbound US 50 (16th Street) and Westbound US 50 (15th Street) - The right lane will be closed from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM - MON thru SAT during construction. For 16th Street the lane closure configuration will start immediately west of J
- Street and continue through to the middle of the block between I Street and J Street. For 15th Street the lane closure configuration will start immediately east of I Street and continue through to the middle of the block between I Street and J Street.
NOTE: (HANDRAIL STATUS)
- The designers and project supervisor are currently working on approving the decorative handrail design and material submittals. Once the design is approved the contractor will coordinate with the supplier to obtain and installation date. The installation date is to be determined at this time.
Stellar Limestone Trail Connector Project:
- Construction is underway on the Limestone Trail Connector, connecting the Milwaukee Trail at 10th Street to the Downtown Streetscape & Courthouse Square via Lincoln Ave/L Street, 14th Street & 17th Street. Below is a list of activities that we anticipate happening over the next week. A weekly update will be distributed during the remainder of the Limestone Trail construction.
Last week's progress:
- Continued pouring new sidewalk, curb and drive approaches on 14th Street from K Street to L Street.
- Currently, work on 17th Street is on hold due to some grade issues. We are working with the designer to determine a solution.
What to expect the week of April 9th thru April 14th:
- Finish pouring concrete sidewalk, curb, and drives on 14th Street.
- Layout and saw cut for removal on the west half of L Street at 10th and 12th Streets.
- Begin removal of sidewalk and curb on the west half of L Street at 10th Street.
- Remove Limestone wall which will be reconstructed on the west half of L Street just south of 10th Street.
NOTE: Weather could affect and delay construction activities.
Customer Access:
- The sidewalk on the south side of 14th Street is closed. The contractor has maintained access to through foot traffic along the west side of K Street.
- The sidewalk on the north side of 17th Street is closed. The contractor has maintained access to through foot traffic along the south side of 17th Street.
- Access to First United Methodist Church parking will be maintained off of 14th Street. The contractor will close one entrance at a time to perform concrete placement.
- NAPA store on 17th Street access will be maintained. Drive access off of 17th Street is currently open. If the drive to NAPA off of 17th Street is closed for construction, access can be obtain via the alley way to the north or east side of the store.
Parking:
Parking is temporarily eliminated along the south side of 14th Street from L Street to J Street
The southbound lane of L Street from 10th Street to 12th Street will be restricted down to 10 foot lanes during construction. Thru traffic will be maintained.
Stellar Facade Renovation Project
Construction began on Monday, April 2nd for the Stellar Community Facades Renovation Project. Below is a list of activities we anticipate happening next week. A weekly update will be distributed during the remainder of the Façades Renovation construction project.
Last Week's Progress:
- Mobilized and set up temporary fence around 1501 J Street location
- Ground out mortar joints (2/3) at 1501 J Street location
- Delivered brick samples to all owners where new is to be installed
- Measured upstairs windows at all locations. Issue with 3 locations and sent RFI #9 regarding issue
- All storefront material and doors ordered. No color changes allowed.
What to expect the week of April 6th thru April 14th:
- Mobilize and set up temporary fence around 1611 J Street location
- Grind out mortar joints and tuck point 1611 J Street location
- Finish grinding out mortar joint and tuck point at 1501 J Street location
- Mobilize and set up temporary fence around 1009 and 1011 16th Street locations
- Remove siding at 1009 16th Street location and begin grinding
- Remove EFIS at 1011 16th Street location
John Williams Boulevard/Lincoln Avenue Roundabout Project
Construction is underway for the John Williams Boulevard/Lincoln Avenue Roundabout.
Last Week's Progress:
Old road for the portion of John Williams Boulevard between Lincoln Avenue and "O" Street was removed
Infrastructure for Water Department was installed
Crews working on a new 9th Street exit onto John Williams Boulevard
What to expect the week of April 9th thru April 14th:
- Continuation of work for new 9th Street exit onto John Williams Boulevard with sub-surface and base
- This portion of road will continue to be closed
- Lincoln Avenue and "O" Street thru traffic will continue to be open
