(BLOOMINGTON) - The eastbound lane of West Kirkwood Avenue between Waldron and Maple Streets reopened at approximately 1:16 p.m. this afternoon, after having been closed at approximately 11:20 a.m. when an area of pavement over a stormwater culvert collapsed.
According to City of Bloomington Utilities Public Affairs Specialist Jon Callahan, the area where the street was compromised has been covered by steel plates until it can be permanently repaired.
Repair will entail rebuilding the sides of the culvert and replacing the top.
It is unclear what caused the collapse, how long a full repair will take, and when it will start.
Normal traffic flow on the street has resumed.
