(ORLEANS) - The 50th Anniversary of the Orleans Dogwood Festival kicks off this coming weekend with a number of special opening events including the 50th Dogwood Queen Crowning ceremonies set for Saturday, at 5 p.m. (at the Orleans Elementary School gym.
The ceremonies are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.
There will be a small admission charge of $2 per person collected at the door.
The event will also include a reception honoring all former dogwood queens, and the naming of the 2018 "Mr. Dogwood."
The newly crowned 2018 Indiana State Festival Association (ISFA) Queen Alyson Gouveia will be taking part in the festivities Saturday evening.
In addition, Senator Erin Houchin and Representative Steve Davisson are expected to be in attendance for the opening portion of the queen crowning to present a special formal Joint Resolution from the Indiana House and Senate honoring the Town of Orleans on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the celebration of the blooming dogwood.
On Sunday night, a Dogwood 50th community event is planned beginning at 7 p.m. at the Orleans Christian Church's Unity Hall with special guest Rodney Dillard, one of "Darling Boys" from The Andy Griffith Show. The event is free to attend.
