(JENNINGS CO.) - A Scipio man died and his female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries in a two-vehicle crash on State Road 7 in Jennings County Friday.
Justin T. Spears, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene 18-year-old Kaitlyn M. Lord, also of Scipio, was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where she is listed in critical condition Sunday morning.
Officers responded to the scene shortly after 8 a.m.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, a white 2010 Kia sport utility vehicle being driven by Spears was traveling southbound on County Road 700W at State Road 7 when his vehicle entered into the path of a 2000 Mack dump truck being driven northbound on State Road 7 by 24-year-old Levi G. Horton, of Seymour. Horton attempted to take evasive action but was unable to avoid Spears' vehicle, and the dump truck collided with the driver's side of Spears' vehicle.
Spears died at the scene.
Lord, a passenger in Spears' vehicle, was flown from the scene to St. Vincent Hospital for treatment.
Horton was not injured.
State Road 7 was closed for nearly three hours for crash investigation and cleanup. The crash remains under investigation, and toxicology results are pending, Wheeles says.
Assisting at the scene were the Jennings County Sheriff's Department, Scipio-Geneva Fire Department, Jennings County Emergency Medical Services, 31 Wrecker Service and Clark's Wrecker Service.
