(SEYMOUR) - A Seymour man was arrested after police say he dumped a Chihuahua in a dumpster at a grocery store at the corner of East Tipton and North Broadway streets.
Police arrested 54-year-old Mark Hammond on charges of theft and cruelty to an animal with a prior offense. He is currently being held in the Jackson County Detention Center without bond.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident took place on March 8. Police were called to the grocery store at 8:30 p.m. after an employee found the Chihuahua in the dumpster.
Officers removed the dog that was covered with sludge and debris from the dumpster. Police say the dog was uninjured. Officers bathed the dog and gave it food and water before taking it to the Jackson County Humane Society.
Police discovered the owner of the dog was a woman who lived near the grocery store. She told police she believed Hammon had something to do with putting the dog in the dumpster. She also accused Hammond of taking $125 from her purse. She told police she confronted Hammond about the missing money and then kicked him out of her apartment. She says her dog followed him outside as he left the home.
Police found Hammond the next day and asked him about the incident. Hammond told police he had gathered his things and left and the dog followed him down the alley. He says when he reached the store he placed the dog into the dumpster. He told police he put the dog in the dumpster because he was mad at the the woman for kicking him out of the apartment and accusing him of stealing her money.
He told police he didn't harm the dog, he just placed it in the dumpster thinking the dog would bark and cry and someone would find him and let him out.
