(BEDFORD) - The community can help letter carriers Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday. Postal workers hope to collect thousands of pounds of nonperishable goods to distribute to local organizations.
Postal patrons are asked to leave donations of nonperishable food beside their mailboxes. Letter carriers, with the assistance of volunteers including more than 20 volunteers from the Lawrence County Lions Club, collect the food and make certain it reaches local pantries. Representatives of the Fayetteville Community Lions and the Bedford Noon Lions also provide assistance and several area schools are also collecting donations.
Lawrence County postal patrons contributed 18,694 pounds of food in 2017, an increase of nearly 600 pounds in 2016.
Retired mail carrier Jan Allen, who organizes the event, says Mitchell food donations will be given to Mitchell's L.I.F.E. pantry office, and Heltonville's food will be donated to a Heltonville pantry.
The rest of the food collected in Lawrence County will be divided among Community Care, L.I.F.E. Food Pantry, God's Place and Bertha's Mission. Becky's Place women's shelter will receive any food collected on Monday, May 14. Any food received on May 15-16 (Tuesday and Wednesday) will go to the Salvation Army in Bedford.
Food collected in Paoli and Orleans will go to the Paoli Food Pantry, and French Lick gives the food collected at the post office retail window to the Springs Valley Food Pantry.
