(BEDFORD) - If you know a child who already enjoys fishing or has never been but might enjoy it, the Hoosier National Forest invites you to the Kids Fishing Derby at the Maumee Boy Scout Camp on Saturday, May 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This event is free and is an opportunity to get local families and children outdoors and excited about fishing.
Fishing poles, lunch, bait, and prizes will be provided; however, if kids have their own fishing gear, they are encouraged to bring it.
Bryan King, Wildlife Technician and coordinator of the event says, "We encourage kids to come out and learn about fishing, and hopefully they'll even catch a few."
Awards are given for the most fish caught and the biggest fish caught for each age group. King said there are several other events at the derby in addition to fishing, including a casting contest, water safety education, bait and fish identification, knot tying, and crafts.
Other event sponsors include Bass Pro Shops, National Wild Turkey Federation, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Boy Scouts. "With the help of these partners, we are able to host a great event that gets kids excited about fishing," says King.
The event is limited to the first 75 kids to register. Registration is open now at the Forest Service Bedford Office or by calling (812) 275-5987. Participants should be 15 years old or younger and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (minimum of one adult per three children).
Check in time for the fishing contest begins at 8 a.m. The contest starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at noon, followed by a free cookout for everyone who attends, including adults. Tarzian Lake at the Maumee Boy Scout Camp is located in Jackson County north of Norman; maps are available at the Bedford office or online at www.goo.gl/BxJ8ae.
If you are interested in attending the annual fishing derby that takes place in the southern part of the Hoosier National Forest, that date has been moved to combine with the Adventures with Nature event on June 23, 2018.
