(JACKSON CO.) - The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to chip seal State Road 58 beginning Thursday - weather permitting - from 0.83 miles east of State Road 135 to just west of Interstate 65.
First-day surface treatment operations will begin in northern Jackson County and proceed to a terminus in Bartholomew County. INDOT officials anticipate completing the application within three work days.
Chip sealing these 27 lane miles of State Road 58 requires closing the roadway between Spraytown and Ogilville to through traffic. INDOT pilot vehicles will escort school buses and local traffic through the work zone.
Chip seals coat the highway with liquid asphalt, sealing pavement cracks and protecting the roadbed from harmful ultraviolet rays. This extends service life and lowers maintenance costs, according to a news release from INDOT.
Small chips of limestone are used to cover the asphalt, choking it from spraying vehicles or sticking to tires. The aggregate chips also restore surface friction for improved skid resistance and driver safety.
These chip seal applications are extremely cost-effective, according to INDOT. Experience shows that every $1 spent on this kind of surface treatment saves $6 to $14 in highway expenditures down the road.
In the near future, a liquid asphalt fog seal will be sprayed over the chip-sealed surface along this section of State Road 58. This will assist in aggregate retention and adds another waterproof layer of sealant to further protect the highway.
