(UNDATED) - Indiana health officials are warning residents that it’s tick season. Health officials say tick bites can lead to serious illnesses, but there are plenty of preventative measures you can take.
The most commonly reported tick-borne illnesses reported in Indiana include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other fatal bacterial diseases.
Symptoms can often look like the flu, with body aches, fevers and headaches.
If you notice a rash after being outdoors should seek medical attention immediately.
Last year, the state saw over 250 cases of tick borne illness.
Tips to reduce tick exposure include tucking your pants into your socks while being outside, using repellent and showering immediately after coming inside.
The Health Department urges residents to regularly do "tick checks" on the body and on pets.
