(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Aquatics (LCA) will be holding their second round of swim lessons in August.
The lessons will be offered in three different skill levels. Level one is open to those with no experience in water.
According to LCA Head Coach Adam Young, "The goal for level one is to get them comfortable putting their face in the water, floating on their back, jumping in and getting out of the pool on their own."
"Level two is where we're going to teach them how to float on their own and tread water- and this would be without a belt- level one will usually have a flotation device or assistance. In level two we will try to get them away from that.... and try and get them to use their arms in a free style motion and actually swim and maybe even begin to learn some back stroke."
In Level 3, participants will master certain strokes such as the front crawl, back stroke and practice diving head first. "Level three is where if they decided they wanted to they could start swimming competitively," said Coach Young.
Each instructor is assigned to four or five swimmers to insure each participant gets ample time with the instructors. There will be three sessions available. Each session is two weeks long consisting of 6 lessons that will be scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All lessons will be held at the BNL High School Pool.
Each lesson will incorporate a water safety lesson along with safety lessons, "The first thing we tell them is to not run on the pool deck. Another one might be how to help someone in the water - so for example, you don't want to just jump in and try to grab someone. You want to try to reach them with something and pull them to the side."
LCA is a USA Swim Club that provides the opportunity for all swimmers to reach their highest potential. LCA has a group called the Minnows. This group is considered to be the entry level competitive swim group in LCA. The skill level for that group corresponds to the Level 2 swim lessons held by LCA.
"We're a competitive swim club, but when you take the 'competitive' out of things - I think knowing how to swim and being able to survive in water situations is something that everyone should know how to do," said Coach Young.
"What I run into a lot of times is that people think 'Oh, we're not good enough to do that kind of swimming.' And that's just not the case. We offer very entry level opportunities.... They may never swim in middle school or high school or anything like that.. but they will become a very confident swimmer who can do all four strokes. Then you have a situation where you can take that child boating and not be a nervous wreck all time!" said Coach Young.
LCA has been competing since 2000 and offers swimming opportunities for age groups 10 and under, 11-12 years old, 13-14 years old and 15 and older.
This year Paul Gabhart, LCA swimmer, competed in the Senior State Championship that is held for the 15 and older age group and became the State Champion in 5 of his 6 events; 400 I.M., 500 Free, 200 Free, 200 Fly and 100 Fly.
