Last updated on Monday, May 21, 2018

(BEDFORD) - On Saturday, participants of the Lawrence County 6K for Water walked and ran 6 kilometers or 3.7 miles - the average distance people walk to get water for their families and homes in the developing world.

Each registration to the event provided clean water for one person. According to the Global 6K for Water, nearly 1,000 children under age 5 die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene.

Globally, 844 million people lack access to clean water.

The Lawrence County Global 6K for Water was one of 24 in the state of Indiana and one of thousands in the world.

Troy Krikman was the overall winner for the men's competition while Dana Haddan took first for the women.

The youth winner was Jackson Corey.

The event organized a competition between area elementary schools. The school that had the most participation would receive a special visit from Damon Bailey. Dollens Elementary is the school winner, which is also the school the youth winner attends.

The Lawrence County Global 6K for Water was started by Dive Christian Church of Bedford.
