(BEDFORD) - More than 80 Mitchell students changed up their morning routines on Wednesday morning as they participated in National Walk/Bike to school day for the first time.
"The premise is to promote safe routes to school and make biking and walking safe for students," said Karin DuBois, the Indiana Healthy Community Champion-Lawrence County of Purdue Extension.
DuBois said she overheard some comments from students participating. Those comments from the students included:
"This was so much fun."
"Let's do this again tomorrow and every day."

"This was my best day ever."
In order to have a successful event, the City of Mitchell striped a bike lane from Deckard Dr. to Meadow Moor Way to allow access to the Mitchell High School and painted all the cross walks to go to the school to make sure the students were safe said DuBois.
There are intentions to make a path connecting Main St. to Hancock providing a feasible way to get to the city pool all summer long according to DuBois
This nation wide event had over 2500 schools registered to participate. Indiana had 34 schools registered and Mitchell schools were four of that 32.

The schools say that walking and biking to school can happen every school day as long as a parent or guardian accompanies the students.
Many of the parents and volunteers said this was a well organized event and that they would love to see one in the fall.
