(WILLIAMS) - A Williams teen is facing charges of burglary, theft and runaway charges after an incident last week in the Williams Silverville area.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham, officers said that last weeks incident was not the first time police had to deal with the 17-year-old boy.
Officers first dealings with the teen began on May 16th around 9:49 p.m.
According to Sheriff Mike Branham, the teen's father came on station to report his son as a runaway.
"We then began getting reports on the teen's location," says Sheriff Branham. "Then on Thursday we received a report at 5:49 p.m. about a burglary in progress the 8950 block of Williams Road."
Officers received information that the missing teen was inside a hog barn and possible shots were fired.
Officers secured the area and searched the barns using canines.
"We found two weapons in an office area and discovered a third handgun was missing," Sheriff Branham says. "The teen had fled the scene."
Dispatch then received a call that the teen was walking along Ridge Road carrying the weapon and had fired a shot from the weapon.
"Officers went to that location and saw the boy run into a wooded area in the 1200 block of Ridge Road," Sheriff Branham added. "A canine team went into the woods to search for the boy, but knowing he had a loaded handgun and had fired shots we requested an Indiana State Police helicopter to the area."
Within 5 minutes of the helicopter's arrival, police received information from a neighbor that boy was at their home.
"The neighbor came up to an officer who had secured the perimeter and reported the teen was at his home," Sheriff Branham says. "The boy was located at the home in the 470 block of Williams-Silverville Road. The teen was taken into custody without incident, but he didn't have the handgun. Due to safety issues the teen was requested to take police to the area where he had hide the gun. We didn't want another child to find it and someone get hurt."
Officers recovered the weapon along Ridge Road where the teen had entered the woods.
The teen is facing charges of burglary, theft and runaway charges and is due to appear in court Tuesday where more charges may be filed.
