(SHOALS) - A Martin County deputy was injured Saturday after a driver apparently fell asleep, crossed the centerline and struck the sheriff department’s Humvee.
Reserve Deputy Jason Greene was driving the Humvee escorting the 2018 Jeep & Bike Ride when he stopped to assist at a property damage accident near the intersection of Red School Road and U.S. 50 at about 3:22 p.m.
After the completion of the investigation, Greene left the scene of the accident and proceeded to head west on US Highway 50. At about 4:10 p.m., the Humvee was struck on the driver's side when a silver Subaru, being driven by Ethan Aubrey of Bedford, crossed the center line.
Police say Aubrey fell asleep at the wheel and did not become awake until the moment of impact to the Humvee.
Greene sustained a broken foot and minor contusions and was transported by Deputy John Wright to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center for treatment. Aubrey suffered minor cuts and abrasions to his hands but refused treatment. Two additional passengers in the Humvee were uninjured.
Assisting at the scene were the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Shoals Fire Department, Martin County Ambulance and Indiana Conservation Officer Doane.
