The Times Mail reports that an ordinance was brought before the Mitchell City Council on Monday that proposed the implementation of fees for the collection of mattresses, beds, box springs, dressers, couches and other large household furniture and appliances.
The problem, according to Mitchell Mayor JD England, is that landlords and mortgage companies clean out entire homes, then leave the contents by the curb for street and sanitation crews to collect.
The rule proposed a system in which residents would go to the clerk-treasurer's office to purchase stickers that would then be stuck on junk items to be collected. When street and sanitation crews see the stickers, they would know the fee had been paid and the items could be picked up and taken to the Lawrence County Solid Waste refuse station.
City attorney Byron Steele will draw up a new ordinance to present to the council at their next meeting set for 7 p.m. on July 2.
The plan for the rules for bagged household trash, collected Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, would stay the same. Brush, too, would be collected as it is now.
