(BEDFORD) - An Amish teen suffered internal and back injures after her horse-drawn buggy was struck in the rear.
According to a Lawrence County Sheriff's Department report, 17-year-old Fannie Hershberger, was transported to Monroe Hospital and then airlifted to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.
Around 7:05 a.m. Hershberger was traveling northeast on the right shoulder of State Road 37, on the bridge. She was taking vegetables to town to sell when her buggy was struck in the rear by a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 20-year-old Andrew Camp.
Camp told police he didn't see the buggy because the sun was in his eyes.
The Malibu struck the rear of the buggy, throwing Hershberg from the buggy.
Officer Jim Slone says Hershberger was thrown over the bridge rail and "fell a considerable distance" down the embankment.
The horse pulling the buggy suffered leg injures and may have to be put down.
The buggy and vegetables were a total loss.
Camp was not injured.
Camp did submit to a blood test for alcohol and drugs, which is standard for this type of accident. Those results are pending.
