(SEYMOUR) - A northbound train on the Louisville & Indiana Railroad line was stopped Wednesday morning in Seymour causing delays for motorists after a man riding it illegally fell from the train.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers says 24-year-old Thomas White Jr., of Perryville, Missouri, was injured when his foot was crushed between two of the last train cars. White had boarded the train in Louisville and was attempting to ride it to Indianapolis.
White, who is deaf, called 911 at 5:25 a.m. saying he had fallen from the train and was bleeding badly and intense pain.
Police contacted the engineer, who stopped the train.
The train blocked all but two crossings of the 14 railroad crossings in Seymour from Redding Road on the north side of town to South O'Brien Street on the south side.
Sheriff Carothers says officers found White on the east side ot the tracks near the crossing at County Road 50 North, about four miles south of Seymour.
Deputy Brad Barker and Indiana State Trooper Seth Davidson attempted to carry White to the nearest crossing, but were unable to because of White's intense pain. Medical personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and first responders from Crothersville-Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department used a Stokes basket to transport White to a nearby ambulance. A medical helicopter as alerted but couldn't fly because of bad weather.
He was then transported to Schneck Medical Center for treatment.
Around 7:30 a.m., the train was allowed to move north of Tipton Street, opening up four crossings on the south side of the Seymour at Laurel, Brown, South and Bruce streets.
All crossings north of Tipton Street remained closed until investigators completed their investigations.
