(BEDFORD) - Have you ever wondered why the U.S. Forest Service does prescribed burning? Are you thinking of becoming a wildland firefighter when you grow up, or just curious about what is involved in fire suppression activities?
Stop by the Hemlock Cliffs trailhead today, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. (Central time) and talk to one of the Hoosier National Forest's fire crew.
Free stickers for the kids and a short, scenic hike into the canyon are also available.
To reach Hemlock Cliffs from SR 237 in Crawford County, take N. Union Chapel Road west 2.6 miles. Turn right on Eckert-Hatfield Road. Continue to the entrance marked with a brown Forest Service sign.

If wilderness or history are of interest to you, forest volunteers are hosting an open house at Brooks Cabin on Sunday, July 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Eastern time). This is an authentic log cabin at the edge of the Charles C. Deam Wilderness in Monroe County.
To reach the cabin and wilderness take SR 446 (south of Bloomington) to Tower Ridge Rd. Built by John S. Brooks in the 1890's, the building is characteristic of log homes built in the eastern United States between 1850 and 1920. The Forest Service acquired the cabin in a land purchase in 1992. Until then, the structure was slowly deteriorating as a result of neglect and vandalism.
The cabin was relocated to a location where it could be more accessible and useful. The entrance to the Charles C. Deam Wilderness was chosen as a perfect place to reconstruct the cabin. Volunteers can answer questions about this area or others on the forest. After touring the cabin, visitors are encouraged to experience the wilderness by hiking or driving the Tower Ridge Road to the Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower. There's always something fun to do on the Hoosier National Forest.
