(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was fatally shot after Monroe County Police went to a home to serve an arrest warrant Tuesday morning.
According to Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain, deputies went to a mobile home in the 5900 block of Tower Road around 9:15 a.m. The mobile home is along a wooded area along a gravel dead-end road that runs north of Tower Road, off Ison Road.
Deputies went to the house to serve a warrant on a 33-year-old woman for violating house arrest, but believed 24-year-old Daniel Boyer, who was also wanted on warrants for dealing and possession of meth, was also at the mobile home.
"They had attempted to serve a warrant on him in the past and he fled out a back door," Swain said.
Two deputies approached the rear of the mobile home from a wooded area while another deputy approached from the front.
Boyer exited the home out the back door.
"The male subject who they had been looking for came out the back door with a handgun, pointed it at the deputies and said a comment to the effect of 'f--- this,'" Swain said.
The sheriff said Boyer held a loaded semi-automatic handgun.
The deputies, who feared Boyer was going to open fire, shot him.
Deputies administered CPR until an IU Health Bloomington Hospital crew arrived on the scene. Boyer was transported to the hospital where he died at 10:01 a.m. An autopsy will be done this morning in Terre Haute.
Sheriff Swain has not released the names of the two deputies involved in the shooting but did say one was the department's training officer and a Marine reservist who served in Afghanistan. The other deputy is new to the department.
"We won't release their names for now...give them some time to decompress," Swain said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending an internal investigation. Sheriff Swain says both officers were wearing body cameras and that video is being reviewed.
Following the shooting Indiana State Police and the city's Critical Response Unit were summoned to the scene to secure the home. The team used flash grenades to clear the mobile home.
The woman wanted on a warrant, two other adult women and a 16-year-old boy were all in the home. One of those women was found with drugs in her possession, charges are pending.
Sheriff Swain says the teen, who is related to one of the women, is a ward of the state and had escaped from an Indianapolis facility. While at the department the teen suffered a medical incident and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Swain's press conference held after the incident Tuesday afternoon.
