(WASHINGTON CO.) - Mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in Washington County.
Chris Boling, the county's environmental health specialist, said he was informed by State Entomologist Bryan Price that a sample of mosquitoes taken Aug. 10 tested positive for the disease.
A news release from the State Department of Health says at the last testing, 43 percent of mosquito samples tested tested positive for West Nile.
So far in Indiana there have been two confirmed cases of West Nile virus disease in humans, in Hamilton and Vanderburgh counties.
The health department says the increased risk for human disease will continue until the first hard frost.
To date, 31 counties have had mosquitoes test positive for West Nile. A total of 99,270 mosquitoes and 1,580 pools have been tested statewide with 231 positive tests.
Residents should take steps to protect themselves when outside to avoid being bitten.
