(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County’s Men’s Warming Center has decided to expand the facility’s season. Instead of opening Jan. 1 as it has in the past, doors will swing open Nov. 1.
Rev. Rick Eldred of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Eldred, Greg Stanley and Pastor Bruce Ervin of First Christian Church in Bedford supervise the operation of the Warming Center out of the old Salvation Army building at the corner of 17th and K streets. In 2016, Harp Commons served as a temporary site.
A fundraising effort is currently underway to generate $35,000 so the center can hire three part-time caregivers to staff the facility from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The Warming Center is in need of financial contributions. An account has been set up for monetary donations at both Bedford Federal Savings Bank sites. Other contributions can be dropped off at the St. Vincent Thrift Store - mark them for the Warming Shelter.
Officials with the assistance of Centerstone, who to provide more services besides a hot meal and a place to seek shelter.
Several local churches will provide meals and clothing for those visiting the center.
Men needing shelter or assistance can check in daily at 7 p.m. but must depart by 7 a.m. the next morning. While there, they receive a hot meal and can take a hot shower and wash their clothes.
To volunteer, call the center at (812) 675-6361 or Stanley at (812) 583-5828.
