(BEDFORD) - Hoosier National Forest is offering several public events in October.
Visit the staff in action as they work to create early successional habitat for wildlife and pollinators in the Managing for Wildlife program.
During these programs, wildlife biologists will be on site to explain the work in progress and answer questions.
The first program will be held October 4, from 8 a.m. to noon, eastern time.
At this event, only participants will be able to see the types of equipment used including chainsaws, tractors, and sprayers, how to use them safely and what the desired habitat goal is.
The first event site is in Orange County, approximately 3 miles west of Prospect on Ind. 150.
Look for event signs near the Lost River bridge.
The second program will be held October 12, from 9 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., central time. The second event site is in Perry County about 2.3 miles east of Ind. 66 on Orchard Rd. From Ind. 66 turn east onto Onido Rd, then left onto Orchard Rd. Look for event signs.
On October 6, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., central time, an open house at the Rickenbaugh historic home will be held as part of the Perry County Fall Festival.
Light refreshments will be served.
This historic home will be open for visitors to view and ask questions of our staff. Built in 1874, it was sold to the Forest Service in 1968. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Forest Service has rehabilitated the property with the cooperation of many local partners and grants. The building is constructed entirely of local materials: sandstone, oak, poplar, and walnut.
The Celina Post Office occupied three shelves in one of the large cupboards from 1880 until 1951. Join us to learn more of the unique history of this family and area.
Located at the Indian-Celina Lakes Recreation Area, off Ind. 37, south of I64, in Perry County.
The event is free, but there is a $5 fee per vehicle to access the day use area.
Also on October 6, from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., central time Here Come the Bats will be presented.
Test your knowledge of one of Halloween's most important critters - bats. Attend to learn fact from fiction.
Discover bats on the Hoosier National Forest and how they play an important role in their ecosystem and in your life.
After the presentation, there will be complimentary candy, refreshments, and crafts.
