(OOLITIC) - None of the residents who attended a public hearing on a proposed water rate increase for the town of Oolitic want to pay more for water, but they seemed to accept that the town can’t dodge the bullet any longer and rates must go up.
The Times-Mail reports that the council room of Oolitic Town Hall was filled to capacity Monday during the public hearing. When no more seats were left, residents stood in the doorway and hallway outside of the council room.
The town council has proposed a 42 percent rate increase.
The Financial Solutions Group, a consulting firm based in Plainfield, conducted a water rate survey and says the water rate increase is long overdue.
The town buys its water from Bedford Utilities. Over the past several years, Bedford has increased what it charges Oolitic, but the town absorbed those increases without raising water rates.
The increase will be considered for adoption by the town at the next council meeting Oct. 29.
