If you have had cancer and live in Lawrence County, you and a guest are invited to a Celebration of Life luncheon on Saturday, October 27. Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services (LCCPS) is hosting this annual celebration for cancer survivors, oncology professionals, and their volunteers.
The luncheon will be held at the First Baptist Church, 1515 20th Street, in Bedford from 1:30 to 3:30. Reservations are requested by October 25th to Ruth Ballantyne at 812-279-2276 to ensure there is enough food for everyone. If someone needs transportation to attend the event, please let Ruth know when you make reservations.
Denise Mullis, vice president of the group said, "The food is always great, and nobody goes home hungry, but I think the best part is the fellowship and camaraderie of the survivors and their guests." She said the event truly is a celebration. "You hear a lot of laughter at the tables as people share their experiences and make new friends who understand better than most, just what they've gone through," Mullis notes. She said some who come are still going through treatments while others have been cancer free for many years. All are welcome.
"The Smithville Charitable Foundation sponsors the meal for us," said Mullis, "so no donations from our community are used for this event." She said there will be several door prizes and this year they have a special guest. Captain James Lawrence will be there to greet the guests and speak.
The theme for this year's Celebration of Life is Hope Anchors the Soul. Captain Lawrence, who our county is named after, thought with this being the bicentennial of his namesake county, and with the nautical theme, it was the perfect opportunity for him to make an appearance. Captain Lawrence, famous for his "Don't Give up the Ship" quote, will share some insights to the crowd.
There will also be a short tribute to Patty Robertson, the long-term president of LCCPS who passed away earlier this year.
