(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County will hold the first mobile home tax sale in the state in the courthouse lobby on October 31st at 10 a.m.
Treasurer Paula Stewart says there are currently 90 mobile homes with delinquent payments in Lawrence County.
"Of those 90 properties, 31 homes have been identified as 'no longer there'," she says. "This means that these 31 taxpayers have either torn down their mobile home without letting the assessor know or torn down their home since January 1st, 2017. We have 59 properties left on our active list."
But she's hopeful multiple notices sent to the owners will result in the county collecting most of the more than $17,000 owed before the sale.
"Our office is in the process of placing notices on all homes on the list that can be located," she added. "As a part of this process, we are finding homes that are no longer there. We fully expect there to be more missing homes and the list will be adjusted accordingly."
Stewart says the notice is not required by statute but is being placed as a courtesy. Lack of notice on an eligible home does not prevent the home being sold.
In January the county had more than 700 delinquent properties, at just a little over $200,000. By June the county had collected 67 percent of that money.
"Taxpayer response has been outstanding," Stewart added. " Many folks have come in to pay and also to receive information. Some have judgment filings that were unknown. This process already qualifies as a huge success without ever getting to the actual sale."
People must pay the taxes owed before October 30th, at 4:30 p.m. No payments will be taken the day of sale.
