(FLOYDS KNOBS) - A southern Indiana family taking a motorcycle ride on Tuesday ended in tragedy.
Around 2:30 p.m., 71-year-old Dickey Coffey was riding with his wife, Vonda on the back of his motorcycle and their son, 51-year-old Kimmy who was driving his motorcycle.
Indiana State Police report that the family was traveling west on U.S. 150 near Cross Road when both men attempted to pass a slow-moving pickup truck with a trailer.
As they were passing, a car driven by 25-year-old Whitney Gaines of Fredericksburg approached eastbound in the other direction.
When the men attempted to get the bikes in front of the truck, their bikes collided, sending Dickey and 71-year-old Vonda Coffey into the eastbound lane where they collided with Gaines' 2003 Toyota Camry and threw them from the motorcycle.
Dickey Coffey of Floyds Knobs died at the scene. His wife was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital in Louisville with life-threatening injuries.
Kimmy Coffey of Lanesville was not injured. He lives in Lanesville.
Whitney Gaines was also transported to University Hospital for treatment.
The crash remains under investigation. U.S.150 was closed for approximately three hours.
The Indiana State Police were assisted by units from the Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Posey Township Fire Department, Washington County EMS, and the Washington County Coroner's Office.
