(BLOOMINGTON) - DNR fisheries biologists and volunteers have been constructing and placing fish habitat structures at designated locations at Monroe Lake as part of the Reservoir Aquatic Habitat Enhancement Program (RAHEP).
The program, called the Reservoir Habitat Enhancement Program, started in 2016. It will enhance habitat through the placement of structures, shoreline stabilization, and dredging.
In some reservoirs, existing aquatic habitat has deteriorated. Other reservoirs may have been lacking in habitat since construction due to water quality, water level fluctuations or other issues.
More than 200 structures have been built this year. RAHEP is designed to build fish habitats in reservoirs where the natural structure is lacking.
Monroe Lake is the third lake project since the program's conception. Monroe was chosen for the program because of the property's strong partnerships with local entities and its relative lack of aquatic habitat.
Three different structure types are being used. Structures were placed in 8-10 feet of water in clusters of four to five structures.
A map providing GPS coordinates of cluster locations on Lake Monroe can be found here.
