(DAVIESS CO.) - A very surprised and then emotional Daviess County Sherriff Jerry Harbstreit was given the state’s highest honor from the governor Friday.
The Sheriff who has served multiple terms as Daviess County Sheriff and a two-time president of the Indiana Sheriff's Association was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash winner.
Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch was in Washington on behalf of Governor Eric Holcomb to present the honor at the Security Center.
Chief Deputy Gary Allison and others managed to pull off the surprise.
Chief Deputy Allison took the sheriff out under the pretense of looking at a house and they took a long ride in the river bottoms.
A room filled with family friends, county and city officials and sheriffs from five other counties and the Director of the Indiana Sheriff's Association were on hand to witness the event.
