(BEDFORD) - Thanks to generous donations, improvements have been made to the Horse and Pony arena at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
Rebecca Hicks, leader of the 4H Horse and Pony club began collecting donations in February.
They collected $3,000 and with the help of the Fair Board were able to excavate the area, remove rocks, put down road mesh to keep any other rocks or glass from surfacing and hauled in 292 tons of sand to make a safe riding surface.
Once the donations came in, work commenced.
In addition to the new riding surface, all of the posts and fencing have been replaced and the old stage area, which posed a hazard to riders, was removed.
Club members, parents, committee members, and volunteers donated the labor.
With the improvements in place, the Horse and Pony Club is looking to build a cover over the arena so the participants don't have to ride in the hot sun during the summer months and fair time.
